Listen Instead of Reading: How to Use Your Browser’s Read Aloud Feature
Did you know that most modern browsers can read webpages aloud for you? This feature is perfect if you don’t have time to read or just want to rest your eyes while listening. Here’s how to use it on mobile and desktop devices.
On Your Mobile Phone:
-
Chrome (Android & iOS):
-
Open the webpage you want to hear.
-
Tap the three dots (menu) in the top-right corner.
-
Look for “Read Aloud” or “Read Aloud Page” and tap it.
-
Your phone will start reading the page aloud.
-
-
Safari (iPhone/iPad):
-
Open the webpage in Safari.
-
Tap the “aA” icon in the address bar.
-
Choose “Speak Screen”.
-
Swipe down from the top with two fingers to start the reading.
-
-
Edge & Firefox (Android & iOS):
-
Open the webpage in the browser.
-
Tap the menu (three dots) and select “Read Aloud” if available.
-
The browser will begin reading the page aloud.
-
On Desktop/Laptop:
-
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari may not have a built-in read-aloud feature on desktop by default. Some desktop browsers support accessibility extensions or add-ons for reading text aloud, but the mobile version generally has the simplest built-in experience.
Tips:
-
Adjust the voice, speed, or volume in your phone’s accessibility or browser settings.
-
Use headphones for better clarity if you’re in a noisy environment.
-
Try it on one page first to see how it works — it’s simple and hands-free!
Listening to content can make long articles easier to digest and let you multi-task while still absorbing the material. Give it a try next time you’re on the go!
